Let’s face it; a 6 ½’ program is great if you are selling retail due to a number of factors:

·         Shipping costs are minimized due to “oversize” restrictions from many parcel services

·         Margins can actually be increased due to more units of product being sold per transaction

But if you’re servicing any type of production customer…

·         Shipping is not a factor because the material leaves with your subcontractor

·         You may have to include transitions as part of the total bid which lowers the overall job margin substantially when more than one transition is needed

·         You’re probably using the same products for several customers and can utilize complimentary efficiencies

While quality should always be the first and foremost concern, profit and operational simplicity follow as a close tie for second.  With the average doorway spanning about 3’6”, a 6 ½’ transition can only be used once leaving about 3’ for the dumpster, while 8’ can be used twice in the same house.  Obviously, the best solution would be a complete transition to an 8’ program but for those plans that require an odd number of transitions, the 4’ is a perfect supplement that does not require your warehouse to cut product or your subcontractor to return extra material.  This program fits a turn-key operation seamlessly.  With this revised program, the savings quickly add up as you can see on the above graph.  If you take the same line and extend it to several dozen houses of openings, the savings can amount to several thousand dollars annually!  Generally, the savings will average over 42% per opening.  In today’s competitive marketplace, reducing the cost per unit can help to give you the edge over the competition and increase your total company profits.
